Doménikos Theotokópoulos, otherwise known as “El Greco” was considered one of the most admired painters in history. He was born in Crete in 1541 and after spending some time in Italy, he arrived in Spain in 1577 and established himself in Toledo where he lived out his days and where he produced his best known paintings.

 

This tour takes approximately three hours and the proposed itinerary is:

 

We begin with a panoramic tour of Toledo in the group bus where we can admire the marvelous views of the city from the other side of the Tajo River. This will serve as a point where we can have a little bit of an introduction to the culture and history of the city.

 

  • Monastery of Santo Domingo el Antiguo: This monastery was founded by Alfonso VI in the 11th century, and it houses several significant paintings by the artist.
  • El Greco Museum: Recreation of an authentic home of that time where we find a significant sample of works by the artist, painted during his time in Toledo.
  • “The Burial of the Lord Orgaz”: One of the most important out pieces and the masterpiece by the artist, located in the Church of Santo Tomé.
  • Santa Cruz Museum: Formerly the Santa Cruz Hospital, architectural masterpiece of the Spanish Rennaissance which houses several works by the artist.
