Marzipan
Marzipan is a delicious sweet and many countries claim its origin. We reflect here two versions of the story.
Toledan version:
It is said that it was invented by nuns of the convent of San Clemente in Toledo during a famine suffered in Castilla after the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212). At that time there were no wheat in the city, their pantries were filled with sugar and almonds, so they decided to feed people with this delicious food.
Italian version
Eloísa Martorana, an Italian noble, built a monastery in Sicily which took her name in 1193. Most of nuns of the convent were from Greece and they made a mass of sugar and almonds and designed animal and fruit shapes in different colors.
